Beginning writing can include drawing, talking, marks, letters and words. Everyday invitations help children see that writing has a purpose and that their ideas are worth sharing.
Start with something real
Invite your learner to help make a shopping list, label a drawing or create a note for someone. Let the purpose guide the writing instead of asking for a page of repeated letters.
Make space for drawing and talking
A picture can be the beginning of a story. Ask your child to tell you about it. If they want help, write down their words and read them back together.
Support without taking over
Offer a word or model a letter when help is wanted. Let your child make choices about the message and celebrate a specific effort, such as noticing a sound or adding a detail.
Return to the idea
Keep a few pieces of writing to revisit. Your learner might add a label, another picture or a new sentence later. Growth is easier to notice when the focus is on meaning as well as mechanics.
