Reading together is a chance to connect, explore ideas and enjoy a story. A short, comfortable routine gives beginning readers room to participate without making every book feel like a test.

01

Let your reader choose

Offer two or three books and let your child pick. Familiar favorites are welcome: rereading lets a child notice new details and join in with words they remember.

02

Pause for conversation

Look at the pictures together. Ask what your child notices or wonders about. Give them time to respond, and share your own observations rather than asking a question on every page.

03

Keep the moment manageable

Choose a quiet moment and follow your child’s attention. A few engaged minutes are more useful than a long session that leaves everyone frustrated. End with something you both enjoyed.

04

Bring the story into your day

Invite your child to draw a favorite part, retell the story with toys or make a connection to something familiar. Reading, talking and drawing can support one another.
